Doechii Talks About Her Controversial Take on Cats and Why She Thinks They’re Not So Friendly
Doechii Sparks Controversy with Anti-Cat Remarks
Doechii has stirred debate on social media after expressing her dislike for cats in a recent post on Threads. The artist, known for her bold opinions, captured attention when she stated she’s “not a fan of felines whatsoever,” prompting a mixed reaction from her followers.
In a post shared on March 2, the performer stated: “People act like it’s a crime to dislike cats when they genuinely aren’t friendly animals. They don’t wanna be domestic just leave em alone! Like it’s not organic I’m sorrryyy be fr it’s rare that cats are immediately lovey without years of pain and work put in.” She added humorously, “Yall be scratched and beat tf up by your own animals I can’t lmaooo.”
The comments quickly ignited backlash from cat enthusiasts who responded vocally in her comments section, defending the often-misunderstood creatures. This sentiment is not new; perceptions of cats as unfriendly have been the subject of discussion for years. In a 2020 article, the BBC consulted veterinarian and International Cat Care trustee Karen Hiestand, who explained that this belief stems from a “human misunderstanding of the species.”
“Dogs and humans are very similar and have lived together a long time,” Hiestand noted. “In a way it has been co-evolution. With cats, it is way more recent. They come from a solitary ancestor that isn’t a social species.”
Despite the pushback, Doechii remains resolute. In the comments section of her anti-cat post, she shared a video clip featuring Tiffany Pollard from the reality show Flavor of Love, which showed Pollard laughing at disapproving audience members. She captioned the clip, “Me vs Cat owners.”
The artist is currently enjoying a wave of success, having received three NAACP Award nominations, including one for Entertainer of the Year—an honor that ultimately went to Michael B. Jordan. In February, she also won a Grammy for Best Music Video for her song “Anxiety.” Reflecting on her Grammy win, Doechii expressed her surprise on Threads, stating, “I don’t even know what to say … I wasn’t expecting this one, thank u.”
Doechii last released music in 2025, collaborating with SZA on the track “Girl, Get Up,” which debuted at No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her hit “Anxiety,” which reached No. 9 on the songs chart, alongside her collaboration with artists like The Weeknd and JENNIE of BLACKPINK, has solidified her presence in the music industry.
