Santa Ana Winds Expected to Impact Southern California This Weekend: What You Need to Know
Wind Events Expected to Impact Southern California
LOS ANGELES – Southern California is preparing for a series of significant wind events beginning Wednesday afternoon, causing potential disruptions across the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings as the forecast indicates damaging wind gusts combined with cold air moving into the area.
Starting Wednesday, residents can anticipate gusts reaching between 35 and 50 mph in the mountains and valleys, escalating to more hazardous conditions with gusts up to 70 mph expected during a stronger Santa Ana event set to peak on Friday and Saturday. This has raised concerns regarding downed trees and power outages, as well as hazardous travel conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
“Damaging wind gusts are expected, creating travel hazards across major freeways and possible delays at LAX and Burbank Airport,” the NWS cautioned. They emphasized the importance of preparation, advising that loose outdoor furniture and other unsecured items should be secured before the winds pick up.
Forecast Highlights:
Wednesday Afternoon: Northerly winds will develop, primarily affecting mountainous areas and major corridors like I-5, with advisories taking effect by 4 p.m. for regions including the Antelope, Santa Clarita, and San Fernando Valleys.
Thursday Morning: The potential for light snow over the Grapevine increases, with snow levels anticipated to drop to 4,000 feet.
Friday to Saturday: A "moderate to strong" Santa Ana event will emerge, with wind speeds expected to peak at 60–70 mph in the Western San Gabriel and Santa Susana mountains.
Temperatures across the region are projected to remain in the 60s and low 70s, with a notable decrease in higher elevations.
Timeline of Conditions:
- Wednesday Evening (6 p.m.): Wind advisories activate in multiple valleys.
- Saturday: Winds set to reach peak strength across the area.
- Sunday – Monday: A gradual decrease in wind intensity is forecast, although weaker Santa Ana winds may persist.
Forecasters have highlighted the risks to both commuters and local infrastructure, warning that travelers should avoid wind-prone corridors during peak gusts, especially if driving larger vehicles. Residents are advised to stay informed about potential airline delays, particularly for flights departing from LAX and Burbank.
This prolonged period of unsettled weather is expected to impact many aspects of daily life in Southern California as residents prepare for the coming wind events.
