Samantha Morton Leads in New Kidnap Thriller ‘Love and War’ at Cannes Market
Samantha Morton to Star in Rescue Thriller "Love And War"
Two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, known for her recent performances alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in Anemone and in the Starz series The Serpent Queen, is set to headline the upcoming rescue thriller Love And War.
Alliance Media Partners (AMP) has announced the launch of international sales rights for the feature ahead of next month’s Cannes market.
Directed by Lisa Mulcahy, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Elisabeth Gooch, Love And War is produced by Michael Garland, noted for his work on Death of a Superhero. The film is inspired by a true story, depicting a mother who must navigate the dangers of war-torn Syria to retrieve her young daughter after she is taken across borders by her estranged husband. The narrative emphasizes the mother’s relentless determination as she faces shifting alliances and bureaucratic obstacles, all while time runs out to save her child. Pre-production is anticipated to begin in August 2026, with financing currently in progress.
Samantha Morton expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “The film Love And War is an incredible testament to a mother’s love, and to what a mother is capable of doing to save her child despite extraordinary circumstances. I was moved beyond words upon reading.”
Producer Michael Garland shared his excitement about collaborating with Morton and Mulcahy, highlighting the importance of the film’s message. “I’m thrilled to be working with the combined talents of Samantha and Lisa on this important and thrilling film. The bonus of working with the people at AMP adds hugely to the potential of the project – they are 100% with the filmmakers all the way, and we have a united vision – to deliver a gut-wrenching thriller underpinned by a profoundly moving and heart-wrenching narrative,” he said.
Anthony Buckner, AMP’s Head of Sales and Acquisitions, noted the intense emotional pull of the film. “From the moment you meet Sarah, the tension takes hold and never lets up as she is drawn deeper into a war-torn landscape on an almost impossible mission to save her daughter. This is a gripping and deeply human thriller rooted in a remarkable true story. Samantha Morton is the perfect actress to carry it, and I can’t wait to share it with international buyers at Cannes.”
