Rob Reiner, a renowned filmmaker, expressed in a September interview that he believed his son, Nick, was "in a really good place." This insight came just three months prior to the tragic events that unfolded on December 14, when both Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were killed.
In previously aired clips from his interview with NPR, Rob discussed the challenges and journey he shared with Nick, who co-wrote the 2015 film Being Charlie, directed by Rob. The film chronicles the life of a teenager grappling with addiction, reflecting some of the darker episodes from Nick’s own past, particularly after he began using drugs at a young age.
During the interview, Rob compared their father-son relationship to that of the film’s characters. He emphasized his commitment to being present for Nick, stating, "I was never, ever too busy" for him. He added, "I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help." Rob acknowledged the complexities of their relationship and admitted that he had made mistakes along the way.
Rob was optimistic about Nick’s recovery, stating, "He’s been great … hasn’t been doing drugs for over six years. He’s in a really good place."
However, the situation took a grim turn when, according to records from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Nick was taken into custody on December 14 and charged with two counts of murder related to his parents’ deaths. Following a December 15 press release, it was confirmed that he was being held without bail.
Rob and Michele, who were married since 1989 and first met while Rob was directing When Harry Met Sally…, shared two other children: son Jake and daughter Romy. Rob also has a daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage to Penny Marshall.
Nick’s prior struggles with addiction and homelessness have been well-documented. In a 2016 interview, he recounted his experience of being homeless across various states, stating, "I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street." He noted that those hardships shaped who he became, adding, "Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in Los Angeles and being around my family. But there were a lot of dark years there."
