Michelle Obama Shares Insights on Obama Family Christmas Traditions
In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on December 15, Michelle Obama disclosed that the Obama family sends out an impressive number of Christmas cards each year, revealing details about their extensive holiday mailing list.
During her conversation with host Jimmy Kimmel, Michelle shared that the mailing list encompasses “friends, family, business people, and foundation people,” totaling over 100,000 cards annually. Kimmel expressed surprise at the number, prompting Michelle to clarify, “But that incorporates friends, family, business people, so it’s a lot of folks that we want to thank.”
The former first lady explained that these cards reinforce connections during the holiday season. The Obama family, including Michelle, her husband Barack, and their daughters Malia and Sasha, uphold a tradition of sharing sentimental moments on social media to mark the Christmas holiday each year. Last year, for instance, Barack posted a family photo on Instagram, while Michelle shared an image of their family dog, Sunny.
Additionally, Michelle discussed her family’s holiday gift-giving practices, asserting that she is the chief organizer. “Everybody gets a gift, but I’m generally the one who is orchestrating it,” she noted. When Kimmel inquired whether Barack has assistance in selecting gifts, Michelle humorously mentioned her stylist, Meredith Koop, as a consultant for his gift-giving efforts.
Reflecting on Barack’s attempts to choose gifts early in their relationship, Michelle shared a light-hearted moment, stating, "You know, he tried for a few years, early on in our lives, and I would open it up like, ‘Oh yeah, you tried.’”
The Obama family’s holiday traditions highlight their close-knit family dynamics and their continued engagement with friends and supporters, emphasizing gratitude and connection during the festive season.
