Remembering Marcia Ann Burrs: Beloved Hallmark’s Mrs. Claus and Star of ‘Young Sheldon,’ ‘Mad Men,’ and ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ Passes Away at 85
Marcia Ann Burrs, a seasoned character actress known for her roles in various television series, passed away on Sunday, March 22, in Matthews, North Carolina. She was 85 years old. Burrs is best remembered for portraying Mrs. Claus in two Hallmark Christmas films and as the former high school girlfriend of Danny DeVito’s character in an iconic episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Her family announced her death, noting that she passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. The specific cause of death has not been disclosed.
Burrs appeared in notable feature films such as Rob Reiner’s Rumor Has It… (2005) and Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring (2013). However, she was most prolific as a character performer, gracing numerous television shows from the 1988 series The Slap Maxwell Story to more recent productions including Young Sheldon, Angie Tribeca, and Grace and Frankie (all in 2017).
For those who cherish holiday films, Burrs is fondly remembered for her role as Santa Claus’s wife in Hallmark movies Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus (2004) and Meet the Santas (2005), alongside actors Steve Guttenberg and Crystal Bernard.
Her diverse television credits include roles in high-profile series such as Mad Men, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, How I Met Your Mother, Bones, The King of Queens, My Name Is Earl, Monk, Frasier, That ’70s Show, Scrubs, Station 19, and That’s So Raven.
In a memorable Season 2 episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia titled “Mac Bangs Dennis’ Mom,” Burrs played Angie Spinola, who reconnects with Frank Reynolds, portrayed by DeVito, after many years. Their humorous reunion highlights the contrast between their youthful personas and their present selves.
“I think you’re too old for me,” remarks Frank.
“Frank, I’m two years younger than you,” Angie replies,
“That’s what I’m talking about,” he says, capturing a comedic blend of confusion and annoyance in Burrs’ performance.
Born on November 25, 1940, in Manila, the Philippines, Burrs moved to New York City after studying drama at The College of William & Mary. She embarked on a career in musical theater, commercials, and soap operas. In New York, she met and married Joseph Edward Bures, with whom she spent over 52 years until his death in 2020.
Burrs is survived by her daughters Jennifer Martin and Diana Fuller, their husbands, two grandsons, two brothers, a sister, and other extended family.
