First Look at ‘Mother Mary’: A New Film by David Lowery
Director David Lowery’s latest feature, Mother Mary, has generated significant buzz with its initial reveal. The film stars Anne Hathaway, alongside a compelling ensemble that includes Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs.
The film’s plot centers on iconic pop star Mother Mary, portrayed by Hathaway, who confronts long-buried wounds as she reconnects with her estranged best friend and costume designer, Sam Anselm, played by Coel. This emotional reunion occurs on the eve of Mother Mary’s highly anticipated comeback performance.
Mother Mary was filmed in Germany, with support from Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the DFFF. Producers include Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, and James M. Johnston, along with Jeanie Igoe from Homebird Productions and Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, and Jonathan Saubach from Cologne-based Augenschein Filmproduktion.
The film’s score will be composed by Daniel Hart, while original songs are produced by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX.
