Rachel McAdams recently paused to remember her late co-star Diane Keaton, with whom she starred in the 2005 holiday film The Family Stone. This reflection came during her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, where she expressed gratitude to “the legendary working actors who I was given the great gift to learn from.”
Among those she acknowledged was her “beloved Diane Keaton, who took me under her wing like I was her own daughter.” McAdams emphasized Keaton’s teachings, stating, “No matter how long you’ve been doing this, you have to leave everything you’ve got on the table.” She continued, “Each performance, you must muster up as much love as you possibly can. And then you’ll only feel like a dumb-dumb idiot half the time in life.”
In her Variety interview, coinciding with the ceremony, McAdams conveyed her ongoing battles with self-doubt. “I remember Diane Keaton saying to me during The Family Stone that she still felt like acting didn’t come easily to her,” McAdams noted. “I was so surprised by that because she’s so effortless and she gives so much to it. But I still don’t feel like I have the art of acting figured out,” she added.
The Family Stone, which also featured stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney, and Luke Wilson, revolves around a close-knit family welcoming Parker’s character, Meredith, into their fold. Keaton portrayed the family matriarch, Sybil Stone, whose breast cancer diagnosis serves as a catalyst for the family’s reunion.

Diane Keaton passed away on October 11 at the age of 79 due to a bacterial pneumonia infection. A statement from her family expressed gratitude for the messages of love and support they received during this difficult time.
Following Keaton’s death, Thomas Bezucha, the writer and director of The Family Stone, revealed he is working on a sequel to the beloved holiday film. “I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha said. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
