A producer familiar with Rob and Nick Reiner’s collaboration on Being Charlie expressed disbelief over the tragic events surrounding the deaths of Rob and Michele. This devastating incident has sent shockwaves through the film community.
Douglas Shaffer, an executive producer on Being Charlie, described Nick as “a gentle guy.” He noted that the script, co-written with friend Matt Elisofon, was inspired by Nick’s struggles with drug addiction. “He was very open,” Shaffer said, adding that there seemed to be no signs of inner rage. “He seemed just kind of calm, cool, and collected… it’s just a mystery.”

Being Charlie features Nick Robinson as Charlie, a young man battling drug addiction while navigating his complex relationship with his parents. Nick Reiner worked with Elisofon, a friend he met in rehab, to co-write the film.
Shaffer also mentioned Stephanie Rennie, another producer closer to Nick and Elisofon, who reacted to the news with disbelief. “It’s a fever dream… it’s just unfathomable,” Shaffer quoted her as stating. “Nobody saw it coming, and it doesn’t make any sense to her.”

Shaffer hopes that as the investigation unfolds, it will shed light on the underlying issues. “I feel like it is a mental health issue that needs to be on the forefront of discussions,” he stated. “It affects a lot of people and families, including this one, which seemed to have a perfect support system.”
Nick Reiner was candid about his struggles with addiction during the promotion of Being Charlie. Rob discussed his feelings of desperation in wanting to help his son through these difficult times.
In a September 2025 interview, Rob mentioned that Nick had been drug-free for over six years, describing him as “great” and noting that he was “in a really good place.” Nick made his first court appearance on December 17, with his arraignment scheduled to continue on January 7.
