Police Clear Large Gathering in Leimert Park
Police Disperse Crowd in Leimert Park After Violent Incident
LOS ANGELES — A chaotic scene unfolded in Leimert Park on Monday afternoon following an MLK Day celebration, culminating in police intervention to disperse a gathering that turned violent.
Authorities responded to reports of a stabbing at the intersection of McClung Drive and Stocker Street West. While no victim was immediately located at the scene, an ambulance was requested, although it is unclear if anyone was transported to a hospital.
As officers arrived, tensions escalated, leading to confrontations among individuals in the crowd. Reports indicate that police established skirmish lines to regain control, urging attendees to disperse.
In the midst of the chaos, police discovered an individual who had reportedly been beaten near a McDonald’s at 43rd and Crenshaw, although the victim’s condition remains unknown. The crowd eventually dispersed, and authorities confirmed that several arrests were made, though the specific number has not been disclosed.
Commenting on the incident, Mayor Karen Bass expressed concern, stating, "Unfortunately after the parade, LAPD responded to a group of young people creating a disturbance and there are reports of a stabbing towards the end of the parade route that remains under investigation. Los Angeles has zero tolerance for this type of violence."
Earlier in the day, the area had been filled with thousands celebrating the annual MLK Day Parade in South Los Angeles, contrasting sharply with the violence that followed.
