Owen Cooper from Adolescence Sets a New Awards Record at the Golden Globes
In September, Owen Cooper emerged as a historic figure in the entertainment world, becoming the youngest male recipient of an acting award at the Emmys for his role in the Netflix hit Adolescence.
The 16-year-old actor achieved yet another milestone at this evening’s awards ceremony, setting a record as the youngest winner in the Best Supporting Actor category. He surpassed the previous record held by Chris Colfer, who won at the age of 20 for Glee in 2010.
Cooper, who secured the award for Best Performance By a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television, is also noted as the second youngest male actor to win a Golden Globe, following Ricky Schroder, who was just nine when he earned the New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture award for The Champ in 1990.
In a competitive category, Cooper outperformed notable nominees including Billy Crudup from The Morning Show, Walton Goggins and Jason Isaacs from The White Lotus, Tramell Tillman from Severance, and his co-star Ashley Walters from Adolescence.
“Standing here at the Golden Globe does not feel real, whatsoever. What an incredible journey me and my family have been put through,” Cooper expressed during his acceptance speech. “We are forever grateful… I thought I might be okay, I might be awful, I never know. So, I took a risk, and I went to drama classes. I was the only boy there. It was embarrassing, but I got through it."
He acknowledged his ongoing growth as an artist, stating, “I’m still very much an apprentice. I’m still learning every day, I’m still learning from the people that are sat in front of me, that inspired me. It’s mad what’s going on.”
Cooper is set to star in the upcoming Warner Bros. adaptation of Wuthering Heights, alongside Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. He wrapped up his speech with a note of enthusiasm and a nod to his favorite soccer team, Premier League champions Liverpool F.C., saying, “Bring on 2026. You’ll never walk alone.”
In Adolescence, Cooper plays the character Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy faced with a murder accusation. The series, featuring Stephen Graham as Miller’s father, gained significant acclaim, becoming Netflix’s second most-watched English-language series last year.
