Ontario Warehouse Arson Suspect Faces Federal Charges
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. — Chamel Abdulkarim, a 29-year-old resident of Highland, is set to be arraigned today for allegedly igniting a six-alarm fire that destroyed a Kimberly-Clark distribution center in Ontario. The fire, which occurred early Tuesday morning, caused an estimated $500 million in damages.
Federal prosecutors have charged Abdulkarim with serious offenses, asserting he recorded himself starting the fire and subsequently boasted about the destruction in messages. "I just cost these [expletive] billions," one message allegedly stated. Another read, "All you had to do was pay us enough to live… Didn’t see the shareholders picking up a shift."
As an employee of NFI Industries, the logistics provider for the facility, Abdulkarim’s involvement raises significant concerns. If convicted on the federal charges alone, he could face up to 20 years in prison, in addition to potential life sentences under state charges.
The blaze resulted in the complete loss of the 1.2-million-square-foot facility, which stored household goods such as Kleenex and Cottonelle. Firefighters faced significant challenges, as 175 responders battled to control the flames, ultimately leading to a total roof collapse.
Abdulkarim was arrested just two miles from the scene, shortly after the fire broke out at 12:30 a.m. on April 7. The U.S. Department of Justice filed charges on April 9, following an investigation conducted by the FBI and ATF. He has remained in custody without bail at the West Valley Detention Center.
As authorities delve deeper into Abdulkarim’s social media activity to ascertain a motive, the implications of this incident extend beyond the initial destruction. Kimberly-Clark is expected to release additional details regarding the financial impact during its quarterly update on April 28.
The timeline of events reveals a swift progression from the fire to legal action, with Abdulkarim’s arraignment on state charges scheduled for today in San Bernardino County Superior Court.
