CBS Plans to Expand the ‘Fire Country’ and ‘Sheriff Country’ Universe with an Exciting Medical Spinoff
EXCLUSIVE: Edgewater, a small town in Northern California with a population of 25,000, is making waves in the television landscape. The location serves as the backdrop for CBS’s popular series Fire Country and its spinoff, Sheriff Country, and is now poised to potentially host a third installment of the franchise currently in early development.
The upcoming untitled series aims to expand the narrative universe of Fire Country and Sheriff Country by following a medical team in Edgewater. Initial reports suggest that a character from this new drama could make an appearance in the second season of Sheriff Country.
Despite its promising premise, the medical drama remains in the preliminary stages and has not yet been officially pitched to CBS or CBS Studios, the production company behind the existing franchise. Details regarding potential writers are still unclear, indicating that the project has a long way to go before reaching the screen.
The project is executive produced by Matt Lopez, the showrunner of Sheriff Country, along with co-creators Max Thieriot, Joan Rater, and Tony Phelan, who have played pivotal roles in the success of both Fire Country and Sheriff Country. Additionally, notable executive producers Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed from Jerry Bruckheimer Television are attached to the project.
Following Fire Country‘s successful first season in 2023, former CBS President and CEO George Cheeks had hinted at plans to expand the show into a larger franchise. This strategy came to fruition when a character who eventually became the lead in Sheriff Country, portrayed by Morena Baccarin, was introduced in a season two episode of Fire Country, leading to the offshoot’s series pickup later that fall.
CBS is now looking to replicate this successful formula with the proposed new spinoff. Given the interconnected themes, Fire Country has previously featured several first responders and medical professionals as guest characters, but whether the new series will center around an established character or introduce a new one remains to be seen.
If the spinoff comes to fruition, Fire Country would join a select group of CBS series that have produced three or more spinoffs, including hits like NCIS, CSI, FBI, The Good Wife, and The Big Bang Theory.
Previously, CBS and CBS Studios explored another spinoff titled Fire Country: Surfside, which would have maintained the firefighter drama format but shifted to a different city, akin to the CSI franchise.
Now in its fourth season, Fire Country is the top new series from its debut year, while Sheriff Country has secured its position as the second most viewed new show in its current season, trailing only behind another CBS premiere, Marshals. Both series have already been renewed for the 2026-27 season.
