Christmas Magic Passed Down Generations in Hudson Family
Oliver Hudson recently shared heartwarming reflections on Christmas traditions anchored in his family, particularly credits to Kurt Russell, his mother’s long-time partner, for introducing cherished holiday rituals. In a conversation focused on his new holiday film, A Merry Little Ex-Mas, Hudson emphasized his commitment to celebrating Christmas at their family ranch in Colorado every year.
“Christmas is a holiday and a tradition that cannot be separated one year on, one year off,” expressed Hudson, 49. He noted that his wife, Erinn, appreciates the continuity, stating, “She never had to go back for Christmas because it is a tradition that was created by Kurt… it was a huge tradition and he brought that to us.”
Kurt Russell has been in a relationship with Hudson’s mother, Goldie Hawn, since 1983. Although Russell had previously expressed a desire to adopt Oliver and his sister, Kate Hudson, the siblings chose not to pursue this option, recognizing the love that existed regardless.
Hudson elaborated on their family Christmas celebrations, filled with magic and joy for his children, Wilder Brooks, Bodhi Hawn, and Rio Laura. “Santa shows up, someone’s dressed as Santa, and the night before Christmas is red. Bells are ringing, everyone’s running to the window and looking out into the snow,” he reminisced, describing how children express excitement when they catch a glimpse of Santa.
He recalled one particularly memorable Christmas spent in a small Colorado cabin. “Our first Christmas I ever had with him was in Colorado… he goes, ‘Look, you guys,’” Hudson remembered, describing the wonderment of discovering sled tracks in the snow and finding a bell that had fallen from Santa’s collar among other enchanting details.
“The tableau was just so magical,” Hudson continued, reinforcing the effort to keep the magic of Christmas alive for multiple generations. “It was so real that immediately you’re instilling this into your kids where, ‘Wow, Santa’s real.’” He hopes to maintain that sense of wonder for as long as possible, aspiring to keep the belief alive until his children are around 10 or 11 years old.
