Newport Harbor Closes Gap in Sunset League with Victory Over Huntington Beach
Newport Harbor’s baseball team is gaining momentum in the Sunset League, recently defeating first-place Huntington Beach 1-0. Senior pitcher Gavin Guy delivered a stellar performance, throwing a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts and only one walk, bringing Newport Harbor to a record of 13-3. Huntington Beach now holds a narrow lead at 14-2.
The decisive moment came in the third inning when Keoni Wun drove in the game’s only run with an RBI single. The victory not only narrows the gap between the two teams but also sets the stage for their upcoming matchups, with games scheduled for Wednesday at Huntington Beach and Friday at Newport Harbor.
In additional league action, several other noteworthy games unfolded. Marina secured a 5-1 win over Fountain Valley, with Jaxon Vilardi pitching a complete game. Edison dominated Corona del Mar with a score of 16-3, fueled by Cody Kruis’ impressive three-hit, five-RBI outing.
In other results, St. John Bosco defeated Mater Dei 7-0, with Julian Garcia striking out 10 batters and not allowing a hit. JSerra emerged victorious over Santa Margarita with an 8-7 score, thanks to a walk-off home run by Blake Bowen. Meanwhile, Orange Lutheran shut out Servite 3-0, led by Cooper Sides, who allowed only three hits over six innings.
The Trailblazers of Sierra Canyon overwhelmed Loyola 11-2, and Harvard-Westlake triumphed over Chaminade 12-3. Notably, Temecula Valley clinched the Southwestern League title with a resounding 16-0 win against Vista Murrieta, featuring a no-hitter from Taden Krogsgaard.
In softball, Murrieta Mesa defeated Great Oak 13-0, with Tatum Wolff contributing both in hitting and pitching. JSerra also won against Santa Margarita 5-2, as Liliana Escobar distinguished herself with 14 strikeouts.
