In a thrilling finish on Friday night at Intuit Dome, Vince Carter’s team triumphed over Carmelo Anthony’s squad, edging out a 25-24 victory in the Rising Stars Challenge, a highlight of the NBA All-Star weekend.
Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe was named the Most Valuable Player after scoring the tying and winning free throws in a nail-biting championship game.
The evening kicked off with two semifinal matchups. In the first, Team Melo surged to a 12-4 advantage, only to find themselves trailing 30-26 against Team Rivers. Houston’s Reed Sheppard sank a corner three-pointer, reclaiming the lead at 34-32, but it was San Antonio’s Dylan Harper who sealed the game for Team Melo with a 15-foot jumper, concluding the contest at 40-34. Donovan Clingan from Portland led Team Melo’s scoring with nine points, while Yanic Konan Niederhäuser of the San Diego Clippers notched 10 for the G League squad.
Carter’s team secured their finals position with a 41-36 win against Team T-Mac, with Edgecombe contributing a significant 17 points, including a pivotal fallaway jumper that propelled his team to victory. Cavaliers guard Jaylon Tyson was the top scorer for Team T-Mac with 10 points.
The Rising Stars Challenge, which originated in 1994, originally featured first-year players before expanding to include second-year players in 2012, and adopting a tournament-style format four years ago. Since 2023, the challenge includes 28 players comprised of 21 rookies and sophomores and seven from the G League.
While the Rising Stars Challenge was underway at the Clippers’ home arena, another event was concluding two miles away at the Kia Forum, where the Celebrity Game was held. San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama initiated the jump ball, marking the beginning of the game, which saw rapper GloRilla win the opening tip against reality TV star Taylor Frankie Paul.
The score was knotted at 55-55 with four minutes remaining before “double-time” scoring allowed Team Giannis, coached by Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts, to pull ahead and defeat Team Anthony, coached by comedian Anthony Anderson, with a final score of 65-58. Emmy-winning actor Rome Flynn led the way, scoring 17 points and delivering four assists to earn his second consecutive MVP title.
