New Charges in DUI Hit-and-Run Case Involving the Tragic Death of 18-Year-Old Tennis Star Braun Levi
Charges Filed in Fatal DUI Incident in Manhattan Beach
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. — The tragic death of 18-year-old tennis star Braun Levi, who was struck by a vehicle while walking with a friend, has led to murder charges against Jenia Resha Belt, the alleged drunk driver involved in the incident. The collision occurred on May 4, 2024, near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Ronda Drive.
Belt, 33, faces charges of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, as well as driving on a suspended license. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, she was allegedly operating her vehicle with a blood alcohol level exceeding twice the legal limit at the time of the crash. Following the incident, Belt was arrested but released about a month later, only to be taken back into custody after new charges were filed on December 18, 2024.
Levi’s mother, Jennifer Levi, is set to address the public for the first time during a press conference on Monday, alongside District Attorney Nathan Hochman. This event aims to shed light on the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding her son’s death.
Braun Levi was noted for his impressive athletic achievements, serving as the varsity tennis captain at Loyola High School and earning a scholarship to the University of Virginia. His family had recently relocated to Manhattan Beach after losing their home in the Palisades Fire. In addition to his athletic skills, he was involved in various school activities, including serving on the student council.
In the wake of his death, tributes from friends, family, and the tennis community have highlighted Levi’s vibrant presence and leadership. Loyola High School described him as "a shining presence" who brought joy and inspiration to those around him. An official statement from the U.S. Tennis Association Southern California echoed these sentiments, noting his ability to brighten any room.
Court records reveal that Belt’s driving privileges had been suspended due to a previous DUI arrest in November 2023. The legal ramifications of this case continue to unfold, with a scheduled arraignment for Belt set for January 13, 2026. She remains in custody at the Manhattan Beach jail as the case develops.
The upcoming press conference will provide further insight into the prosecution’s stance and the impact of this tragic event on the community.
