Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers Bring Positive Change to an Inland Empire Family
Kawhi Leonard Surprises Moreno Valley Family with New Basketball Hoop
MORENO VALLEY, Calif. – The NBA All-Star Game’s influence extends far beyond the excitement of game day, showcasing its impact on local communities. Los Angeles Clippers superstar Kawhi Leonard made a memorable visit to the Douglas family in Moreno Valley, where he surprised them with a brand-new basketball hoop as part of the Clippers’ community initiative.
As the NBA All-Star Weekend returns to Los Angeles for the seventh time, the Clippers are enhancing their community engagement through the All-Star Homecourt Hoops initiative. This program plans to distribute 5,600 NBA All-Star-branded outdoor basketball hoops to families in the region, including the Douglas family, who were unexpectedly delighted during a visit to the Intuit Dome.
During this visit, the family had the unique opportunity to meet Leonard, an Inland Empire native. The encounter significantly inspired the children and illustrated how the All-Star Game’s influence transcends the sport itself.
The initiative aims to promote youth basketball and community involvement. Isaac Douglas Jr., a youth basketball coach, articulated the importance of access to basketball facilities in his home community. He stated, “We see first-hand how the game gives kids confidence, structure, and a sense of belonging.” Douglas and his wife, Tyshonna, coach local youth aged 8 to 14 and noted that area parks often suffer from overcrowding, limiting practice time to just an hour.
“A hoop would change everything. It would create a safe place where kids can show up, work hard, and believe in themselves,” Douglas explained, emphasizing the initiative’s potential to foster growth and opportunity.
The surprise for the Douglas family occurred on January 25, after they attended a Clippers game against the Brooklyn Nets. Walking through the Intuit Dome, they were met with the unexpected sight of Leonard waiting for them. “It was just shocking… an inspiration on how we can get to that level, and we come from a small town,” said their son, Isaiah.
“Elijah, the youngest, expressed his excitement by saying, “He’s just a great guy, and I can’t believe he gave us a court. We go outside every day and can’t stop playing.”
The encounter left an enduring impact on the family. “It felt natural… one of the best days of their lives,” Tashiana Douglas noted, praising Leonard’s humility and genuine demeanor during their meeting.
For the Douglas family, hearing Leonard introduced as "From Moreno Valley, California" resonates deeply. Isaac Douglas stated, “I just feel good knowing that somebody made it to the big leagues from our town.”
Weeks later, the family’s gratitude continues to grow. “Thank you, Kawhi. Thank you to the Clippers… That was the next step for them to know they are able to make it out of Moreno Valley and make it big,” expressed Tyshonna.
On the court, Leonard demonstrated his prowess, scoring 28 points in the Clippers’ decisive 126-89 victory against Brooklyn that night. He is currently among the league’s top performers, averaging 28 points, along with 6.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists.
As he prepares for his seventh NBA All-Star Game appearance, the Douglas family stands in support of his journey. “I hope you ball out. You worked hard for your spot — just keep going,” Isaac encouraged.
