Netflix Confirms Season 4 of ‘The Night Agent’ Will Be Filmed in Los Angeles
Netflix Orders Fourth Season of The Night Agent, Shifting Production to Los Angeles
Netflix has confirmed the renewal of its political action thriller The Night Agent for a fourth season, which will now film in Los Angeles. The show stars Gabriel Basso and marks a move from its previous locations in New York and Canada.
Shawn Ryan, the series creator and executive producer, expressed excitement about the continuation of Peter Sutherland’s adventures. “It’s been a wild ride filming The Night Agent in five countries across three continents to this point and we’re so thrilled that the adventures of Peter Sutherland will continue into Season 4,” Ryan said. “Our writers, our cast, and our crew stand ready to answer the call to bring our incredible fans even more twists, turns, and thrills.”
However, Ryan’s mention of “five countries” has raised some questions, as The Night Agent has, in fact, filmed in six locations to date. The series began in Canada, moved to the U.S. for its second season, and includes Thailand, Türkiye, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic from its third season.
The recent season’s opening weekend garnered attention as The Night Agent achieved 8.4 million views, landing at No. 2 on Netflix’s English ranking for the week of February 16. This was a significant decline from the 13.9 million viewers who tuned in during Season 2’s first week. The series’ debut weekend attracted approximately 21 million views, with Season 1 continuing to rank among Netflix’s Most Popular English Shows, amassing 98.2 million views within its first 91 days.
Despite initial concerns, viewership improved in the second week, with the season securing 9.9 million views and prompting both prior seasons to re-enter the Top 10 rankings. However, past patterns suggest caution; The Waterfront also saw a viewership bump in its second week but ultimately faced cancellation.
The decision to relocate production to Los Angeles comes alongside a $31.6 million tax credit awarded to Sony Pictures TV. This incentive allows the series six months to commence production, indicating filming could begin by late May.
Ryan has hinted at significant changes for Season 4, noting that the setting will shift to a narrative appropriate for Los Angeles rather than New York. He teased that this season will not revisit international locales and will question the rationale behind the Night Action program.
In Season 3, the story follows Peter Sutherland as he tracks a young Treasury Agent who escaped to Istanbul with sensitive information, leading him to uncover a dark money network alongside a dedicated journalist.
The production team includes Ryan and Marney Hochman for MiddKid Productions, along with several other key individuals from various production companies.
As Netflix continues to diversify its content, the move to Los Angeles aligns with recent productions such as Nobody Wants This Season 2, Running Point Season 2, and The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4, among others.
