Netflix Shifts Focus to Florida with New Sequel to the Norwegian Series ‘La Palma’
Netflix is set to continue its exploration of disaster narratives with a mini-series sequel to the hit Norwegian show, La Palma. The new installment, titled Florida, has been greenlit by the streaming platform and is currently ranking among the top 10 in Netflix’s non-English language charts.
The original series features a talented cast including Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal. Inspired by the 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption, La Palma follows a Norwegian family vacationing in the Canary Islands as they face chaos upon learning about an impending volcanic eruption that threatens to unleash a catastrophic tsunami.
Announced today at an event in Norway, Netflix revealed that Florida will unfold mere hours after the volcanic eruption. The narrative will pivot to a Norwegian community in the U.S. that remains unaware of the impending disaster.

Written by Lars Gudmestad and directed by Cecilie Mosli, the series is produced by Fantefilm, known for its “Scandisaster” productions like La Palma and The Burning Sea.
Gudmestad remarked, “To be able to make Florida is a dream I have had for a long time, and I am very pleased that Netflix also believes in the project. Our ambition is to create a spectacular disaster series with characters audiences can recognize themselves in and truly care about, and that’s why it’s so reassuring to have such a talented and experienced director like Cecilie with us on this journey.”
Mosli added, “People confronted with crises are the most fascinating starting point for drama. With La Palma, Lars Gudmestad, Fantefilm, and Netflix demonstrated the power of combining large-scale disasters with intimate human stories, and I am very proud and happy to be part of the new project, Florida.”
