Netflix Picks Up Compelling Feature Pitch ‘Stradivarius’ by Itamar Moses, Directed by Edward Berger
Netflix to Collaborate with Acclaimed Filmmaker Edward Berger on New Historical Film
Netflix has opted not to comment on recent developments regarding its upcoming film project, but sources indicate that Academy Award-winning director Edward Berger is set to helm the production. Known for his work on Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Front, Berger’s production company, Nine Hours, will also be involved. The film is set in 18th-century Northern Italy, where two of the world’s finest violin makers compete to create the ultimate instrument.
In the theater realm, Moses has made significant contributions, most recently penning the book for Dead Outlaw, which garnered accolades including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Book of a Musical at the Drama Desk Awards, along with Best Musical recognition from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards. His prior works include The Ally, which premiered at The Public Theater in New York and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and The Band’s Visit, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical. His portfolio also features the books for Fortress of Solitude and Completeness, among others.
Moses’s talents extend to television, where he has contributed to Peacock’s Brave New World and the upcoming FX series Cry Wolf, starring Olivia Colman and Brie Larson. A distinguished member of the Dramatists Guild and a regular at the New York Theatre Workshop, he holds a Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing from NYU and has taught playwriting at both NYU and Yale. He is represented by UTA, Untitled, and Schreck Rose Dapello.
Berger first gained widespread recognition with his Netflix adaptation of the acclaimed World War I novel All Quiet on the Western Front. Following this success, he reunited with the streaming platform for Ballad of a Small Player, a dark comedy thriller featuring Colin Farrell, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last year. Just yesterday, he commenced production in Europe on his latest project, The Riders, an A24 drama starring Brad Pitt. Berger is represented by CAA, Range, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
