Christian Bale Embraces His Inner Monster in New Film
Actor Christian Bale takes on the role of Frankenstein’s monster in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming film, The Bride! Set to premiere in theaters on March 6, 2024, the film reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic horror narrative and features Jessie Buckley as the titular character.
Bale, 52, shared insights about the intensive preparation involved in embodying his character. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that transforming into “Frank” required enduring six hours in the makeup chair each day. “I would scream like crazy, every day," Bale explained, describing a ritual to help ease the mental strain of the lengthy process.

Buckley, who plays opposite Bale, noted the intensity both actors brought to their roles, likening their dynamic to that of ‘undead Bonnie and Clyde.’ “We both were two greyhounds that were just let out of their kennels, and it was really, really thrilling,” she recalled. Despite the challenges, she described the shoot as exhilarating, stating it was “probably the most intense, exhausting shoot of my life, but it was so fun."
The production set quickly became an arena for emotional release. Bale recounted how the screaming ritual became a bonding experience among the crew, leading to an impromptu participation where “like 30 people would hear us and run to the makeup trailer to be a part of it and scream as well."
Influences and Comparisons
In addition to Buckley, The Bride! features a notable cast including Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Julianne Hough. Gyllenhaal remarked on the unique coincidence that both she and Guillermo del Toro were working on similar interpretations of the Frankenstein story at the same time, albeit in “extremely different ways."
As anticipation builds for its release, Bale is also preparing for future projects, including a biopic titled Madden alongside Nicolas Cage.
