The upcoming film is co-developed by Legendary Entertainment and Bandai Namco Filmworks, based on a script by director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Mickle will also produce the project alongside his partner, Linda Moran, through their production company, Nightshade. Actor Noah Centineo is also on board as a producer with his partner Enzo Marc.
While specific plot details remain undisclosed, this film will be notable as the first live-action adaptation within the Gundam universe. The only previous live-action venture, a Canadian telefilm titled G-Saviour, aired on TV Asahi in 1999.
Recognized as one of the most influential anime series, Gundam is widely credited with pioneering the mecha subgenre, which focuses on giant robotic battles. The franchise is set in the Universal Century, depicting a future where humanity has colonized outer space. A rebellion erupts between Earth and its colonies, leading to conflicts fought by pilots in large mechanized suits known as mobile suits. Since its inception with the original series, Mobile Suit Gundam, in 1979, the franchise has expanded to include 83 animated series and movies, along with a successful merchandising branch that reportedly generates $600 million annually.
Legendary Entertainment announced its partnership with Netflix to develop a Gundam film in the spring of 2021, initially attaching Vogt-Roberts as director, following his successful collaboration with the studio on Kong: Skull Island. However, both the streaming service and Vogt-Roberts are no longer part of the project.
