NBC Sports Adds Another NFL Game, Bringing Total to Three Broadcasts for the Season’s Final Weekend
NBC Sports Secures Additional NFL Game for Streaming on Peacock
NBC Sports has announced the acquisition of an extra regular-season NFL game, supplementing its existing Sunday Night Football package. This game will be streamed exclusively on Peacock.
Scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 2, the Week 17 matchup will be followed by another game that evening and Sunday Night Football the following night. NBCUniversal is poised for a significant broadcasting weekend, hoping for a thrilling conclusion reminiscent of last season’s matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, where a playoff spot was on the line.
The announcement came during the NBC upfront, coinciding with Fox’s announcement of its acquisition of two additional regular-season games. As negotiations loom with the NFL, which plans to opt out of existing media deals before their expiration in 2033, NBCU and other rights holders are bracing for considerable financial implications. Reports suggest CBS parent company Paramount Skydance could face an additional expense of up to $1 billion.
NBCU last secured an additional game in 2024, but that was a playoff game streamed on Peacock, which netted around $100 million due to heightened viewership. In contrast, the Week 17 acquisition is expected to be a more economical undertaking.
Rick Cordella, President of NBC Sports, expressed enthusiasm regarding the deal, stating, “We’re excited to work with our partners at the NFL to acquire an additional game for NBCUniversal platforms at a crucial point on the schedule. With three NFL games in exclusive national windows on the season’s penultimate weekend, we continue to deliver for our owned-stations, affiliates, and partners.”
With this addition, NBC will broadcast a total of 26 NFL games during the 2026 season, starting with the NFL Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, August 6. This includes 22 regular-season matchups and three playoff games.
