Mike Flanagan Shares His Reasons for Revisiting the ‘Carrie’ Story with a New Series
Mike Flanagan Announces New Adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie
More than 50 years after Stephen King’s debut novel was published, filmmaker Mike Flanagan has revealed plans for a fresh adaptation of Carrie. The eight-episode limited series, produced by Amazon, is set to conclude filming in October.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Flanagan explained his decision to break his established rule against remaking or creating sequels for existing stories. “A new way presented itself, something that felt very timely and new,” he stated.
Flanagan elaborated on his creative direction, noting, “I’ve really enjoyed chasing the things that hadn’t already been done, and trying to find new ways into them.” His previous experience with King’s narrative led him to reassess his stance on sequels, citing his adaptation of Doctor Sleep, a follow-up to The Shining. “That threw that in my face,” he remarked, referring to the familial themes explored in his 2019 film.
“It proved to be irresistible,” Flanagan continued, emphasizing the narrative’s depth. He highlighted that The Shining addresses themes of alcoholism, while Doctor Sleep focuses on recovery, suggesting that the sequel complements the original by portraying “the second side of the same coin.”
The new iteration of Carrie is framed as a reimagining of the iconic story, centering on Carrie White, a high school outcast raised by her overbearing mother. Following her father’s unexpected death, Carrie faces the trials of adolescence, bullying, and the awakening of her telekinetic abilities. This fresh perspective aims to resonate with contemporary audiences while honoring the source material.
