Matthew B. Roberts Shares Thoughts on the ‘Outlander’ Series Finale and Future Movie Possibilities
Finale of Starz’s Outlander Delivers Emotional Closure With Hints of Continuation
The series finale of Starz’s acclaimed period drama Outlander offers a poignant conclusion while leaving a glimmer of hope for a potential continuation of Jamie and Claire Fraser’s saga. Showrunner and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts suggests that fans might one day see their story unfold on the big screen.
In the finale titled “And the World Was All Around Us,” a gripping narrative culminates with Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) confronted by Patrick Ferguson, who fatally shoots him. Ferguson, having led the troops against Jamie at Kings Mountain, reveals a hidden gun during their standoff. Despite Jamie’s demise on the battlefield, his wife Claire (Caitríona Balfe) remains steadfast by his side, pouring her love and sorrows into him, along with her magical powers.
As the episode draws to a close, viewers and characters alike are left in suspense. Just when it appears all hope is lost, both Jamie and Claire take a breath, suggesting their survival. This moment has sparked discussions on social media, with fans speculating if the couple awakens together in the afterlife. Roberts remained tight-lipped on this interpretation, stating, “I’m not telling you a thing. I’m telling you, you get to interpret it. Every single person who watches that show gets to decide for themselves.”
In the days preceding the battle, Jamie exemplifies bravery, having written his last will, bid farewell to his family, and prepared to fight alongside Claire. “As Jamie has said in earlier episodes, he had to do this because he’s not going to let a book keep him from fighting. He said, ‘I have to make this place safe for my family,’” Roberts explained. Jamie understands the stakes, recognizing that failure in battle could lead to devastating consequences for his loved ones.
Claire, equally resolute, insists on joining Jamie in the fight. “She just says, ‘I’m going, and I’m fighting with him,’” Roberts noted.
The finale also includes a notable after-credits scene featuring Diana Gabaldon, the author of the Outlander book series, as she engages with fans at a bookstore. Roberts described this sequence as a tribute to the dedicated crew that has contributed to the series over its eight seasons, emphasizing the personal connection they share with the show and its characters.
Reflecting on the finale, Roberts acknowledged the desire for more storytelling, stating, “The answer is no. There was so much more material. We would never have enough time to do it all.” He expressed empathy for the main actors, having portrayed their characters for twelve years under demanding conditions.
When asked if a film could be a future possibility, Roberts responded, “Maybe.” This tantalizing prospect leaves fans hopeful for further developments in the beloved Outlander universe.
