Lydia Plath Reflects on the Impact of Losing Her 17-Month-Old Brother Joshua at Age 4
Lydia Plath Reflects on the Tragic Death of Her Brother
In a poignant episode of the "Unplanned" podcast aired on January 7, Lydia Plath, a star of Welcome to Plathville, shared her vivid memories surrounding the tragic death of her younger brother, Joshua, who died in an accident at just 17 months old. Lydia recalled specific moments from that day and revealed that she witnessed the aftermath of the accident.
"I remember specific details about his childhood. I remember that afternoon he was sleeping on his blanket in the sun, and then every detail of the accident I remember all too well," Lydia, 21, recounted. "I was in the car when it happened."
The fatal incident occurred in 2008, when their mother, Kim Plath, accidentally ran over Joshua with a vehicle. The death was ruled accidental, and head injuries were noted as the cause. Kim and her ex-husband, Barry Plath, have nine other children, including Lydia.
Lydia provided a heartbreaking glimpse into her family’s emotional response: “My mom, like, freaked out, got out [and] pulled him out from under the car… I saw [Joshua] and it was terrible.” She further explained how, at just four years old, she had to urge her brother Isaac not to look at the scene.
The Impact of Grief on Family Dynamics
Reflecting on her family’s coping mechanisms, Lydia expressed how they struggled to discuss Joshua’s death. “Our household wasn’t necessarily one to just talk about everything and be vulnerable when that happened,” she said, adding that the family often shut off their emotions to move forward. Lydia noted that the impact of Joshua’s death was profound, affecting family dynamics in ways that may not be fully recognized.
"I can see it in my mom sometimes of, ‘Does she know how to connect and how to feel?’” Lydia pondered. "I think [Joshua’s death] definitely affected our family more than most of them realize because it happened so long ago."
She also lamented that Joshua was often not acknowledged. "I don’t think I visited his grave until I was 9 because it was too hard to go back to," she said.
A Unique Upbringing in Rural Georgia
The Plath family, raised on a rural Georgia farm, adhered to strict lifestyle choices that included organic eating and limited technology access. Lydia described their upbringing, saying, “Everything we ate was organic [and] natural. We grew a lot of our own stuff… We all had our own garden at one point.”
In acknowledging her parents’ desire to protect their children from worldly challenges, Lydia shared insights into her mother’s upbringing. Kim, an only child raised by an alcoholic mother, aimed to shield her own children from similar difficulties.
“It led to just being a lot more sheltered than most people,” Lydia reflected, suggesting that while protection is important, "you don’t need to pretend it doesn’t exist to protect your kids from it."
Misunderstandings Regarding Family Beliefs
During the podcast, Lydia clarified that her family’s strict upbringing was not purely religious in nature. “I was raised in a Christian home, but I don’t think my parents did a really good job… I never perceived that the way I was raised was because that’s what God wanted,” she stated. Rather, it was a lifestyle choice her mother made.
The Plaths practiced their faith primarily through family Bible readings and occasional gatherings with other local families, rather than as part of a church community. “We weren’t a part of a church,” Lydia noted, indicating a disconnect from traditional religious practices.
Navigating Family Changes Amidst Divorce
In 2022, Kim and Barry announced their separation after two decades of marriage. Lydia reflected on the impact of her parents’ divorce, sharing that it initially left her hesitant about relationships. “I think there was a point… where I didn’t want anything to do with any relationships,” she admitted.
However, after processing her feelings, Lydia found love with her husband, Zac Wyse. “I’m not going to let fear hold me back from anything,” she declared. The couple married in February 2025, shortly after her parents finalized their divorce.
Looking to the Future
As for family plans, Lydia expressed her eagerness to become a mother, stating, “I’ve had baby fever forever.” She and Zac plan to discuss starting a family in the near future, with Zac affirming their desire to be young parents. “I think we want to be parents pretty soon,” he said.
Lydia’s reflections not only reveal the lasting impact of her brother’s death but also underscore the complexities of navigating family dynamics and personal growth amidst adversity.
