The 78th Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards are currently being held at the Beverly Hilton, celebrating exceptional directing achievements across film, television, and commercials.
This year, 12 competitive categories are in play, with the prestigious Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film drawing particular attention. Nominees in this category include four of the five Oscar-nominated directors: Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another, Ryan Coogler for Sinners, Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, and Chloé Zhao for Hamnet. Guillermo del Toro, nominated for Frankenstein, notably missed an Oscar nod in favor of Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value.
Last year’s DGA award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement went to Sean Baker for Anora, who subsequently won the Oscar for Best Director, with the film also taking home Best Picture. Christopher Nolan, the DGA winner two years ago for Oppenheimer, went on to secure both Best Director and Best Picture Oscars. Nolan currently serves as the president of the DGA and is set to begin labor contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Watch on Deadline
The trend over the past five years shows a strong correlation between DGA wins and the Oscars Directing trophy.
In the television categories, HBO Max’s The Pitt and FX’s The Bear lead the nominations with two apiece, vying for the top spots in the Drama Series and Comedy Series categories. Last year’s winners included Frederick E.O. Toye for FX’s Shōgun, Lucia Aniello for HBO Max’s Hacks, and Steve Zaillian for Netflix’s Ripley, who took home the top awards for Drama, Comedy, and Limited & Anthology series respectively.
This evening’s ceremony, hosted by Kumail Nanjiani, will also feature the DGA’s honorary awards. Among the recipients are associate director/stage manager David Charles, who will receive the Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award for extraordinary service to the industry and the guild, and Commercials 1st AD Gregory G. McCollum, who will receive the Frank Capra Achievement Award in recognition of notable career achievements and outstanding service to the DGA.
