Co-Creators of ‘Hacks’ Share Hints About Season 5 and What’s Next, Including a Fun Movie Idea
Since its debut in 2021, Hacks has garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards, distinguished by its sharp storytelling and outstanding performances, even if it hasn’t dominated the ratings. The series’ co-creators, Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, share a strong desire to continue the narrative.
Although Aniello and Downs, who co-developed the series with Jen Statsky, were cautious about revealing plot specifics, Downs hinted that the story would come full circle as characters Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) return to Las Vegas for what promises to be a triumphant comedic comeback.

Aniello explained that they had envisioned the final scene even during their initial pitch, stating, “It’s five seasons, this is what the last scene is.” She expressed hope that viewers would find the season’s conclusion as satisfying as they do.
Downs noted a shift in one aspect of their original vision: the “runway” for stretching the storyline. He humorously remarked, “Five and a half at least?” in reference to the number of seasons the series might encompass.
The Emmy-winning duo also entertained the idea of a feature-length finale for Ava and Deborah, revealing they brought an early script to the Directors Guild of America Awards for feedback. Drawing inspiration from shows like Community, they joked about following the “five seasons and a movie” model, likening it to Sex and the City’s film sequels, and expressed their openness to further exploring these characters.
Ahead of Season 4’s conclusion, HBO Max renewed Hacks for a fifth season. Following this announcement, Aniello and Downs signed a new overall deal with Warner Bros. Television and the streaming service.
Last year, Einbinder indicated that Season 5 might be the series’ last, saying, “Paul, Jen and Lucia are the true arbiters of that being true, ultimately, but I think the original plan was that they saw a five-season arc in their initial pitch for the show.”
It has been confirmed that Hacks will continue with Deborah seeking to reclaim her legacy after being accused of derailing late-night television. Joining Smart and Einbinder in the cast are Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, and Rose Abdoo, along with new addition Christopher Briney.
