Lindsey Vonn Defies Injury to Compete in 2026 Winter Olympics
In a testament to her resilience, Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn has announced she will compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics, despite suffering a ruptured ACL at a recent World Cup race. The injury occurred on January 30, shortly before the upcoming games, prompting concerns about her ability to compete at an elite level.
Teammate Breezy Johnson defended Vonn on social media, addressing criticisms regarding the lack of a backup athlete. "There will be six Americans running the downhill training runs and if Lindsey cannot compete… or doesn’t feel competitive enough, others can take her place," Johnson explained. She also noted that "more athletes have competed without an ACL than you think," emphasizing that many do not discuss such challenges openly.
Johnson’s comments came after some fans expressed skepticism about Vonn’s decision to race with her injury. Vonn’s determination to compete has resonated with supporters, many of whom have rallied behind her choice. One enthusiastic fan remarked, "Thank you for setting him straight! I’ve tried to defend her choice to others – but there’s too many know-it-all experts out there."
Following her injury, Vonn stated, "This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s a comeback." She added that her "Olympic dream is not over," showcasing her unwavering commitment to the sport.
Just days after the injury, Vonn expressed her intent to race in the downhill event on February 8 in Cortina. "I think I’m still able to fight, and I will do everything in my power to be in that starting gate," she affirmed. Vonn acknowledged the initial pain from the crash but maintained a positive outlook, stating, "I had a feeling it was bad, but I held out hope until I saw the MRI in front of me. But I have not cried, I have not deviated from my plan."
As the competition approaches, Vonn will also evaluate her participation in the Super-G event scheduled for February 12. Her indomitable spirit and fierce determination continue to inspire fans and fellow athletes alike.
