Johnny Gaudreau’s Family Supports Team USA in Men’s Hockey at Their First Olympics Since His Passing
During the 2026 Winter Olympics, Team USA received significant support from the Gaudreau family, in honor of Johnny Gaudreau.
Meredith Gaudreau, Johnny’s widow, along with his parents, were seen in the audience as they cheered for Team USA during the men’s hockey semifinal against Slovakia on February 20. Team USA secured a victory, advancing to the gold medal game against Canada on February 22.
Later on Instagram, Meredith posted a heartfelt message: “You should be here, John, and I’m so sorry you aren’t. So proud of you and your legacy.” She also shared a touching image of their 3-year-old daughter, Noa, dressed in Team USA attire while waving an American flag before the game in Milan, Italy. In addition to Noa, the couple shares two sons, Johnny Jr., 2, and Carter, 10 months.
Johnny Gaudreau, a forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, was a prominent player expected to represent Team USA at the Olympics before his tragic death in August 2024 at the age of 31. He and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, were killed in an accident involving an alleged drunk driver while biking before their sister’s wedding in New Jersey.
The Columbus Blue Jackets expressed their grief in a statement at the time: “The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly, a loving father, son, brother, and friend.” The statement extended condolences to Meredith and the couple’s children, as well as to Johnny’s parents and friends.

Meredith began dating Johnny in 2018 and spoke publicly about their life together shortly after his passing. In Instagram posts, she expressed her profound sorrow: “Thank you for the best years of my life. Despite losing you, I am still the luckiest girl in the world to have been yours. I love you so so much. You were perfect.” She emphasized how Johnny was not only a devoted father but also a wonderful partner in parenting.
Following the tragic events, Meredith revealed at Johnny and Matthew’s funeral in September 2024 that she was expecting their third child. Carter was born in April 2025. In an emotional announcement, she said, “Our third baby is here! I love you so much, my baby! We are going to have so much fun. I can’t wait to give you the best life, my special boy forever. John, thank you for giving me our beautiful family. We love you, Daddy, and miss you so much.”
Johnny Gaudreau is survived by his parents, two sisters, and his brother Matthew, who also passed away at 29. Matthew’s wife, Madeline Gaudreau, gave birth to a son, Tripp, after the deaths of both brothers.
