LeBron James Makes History as an NBA All-Star for the 22nd Time
NEW YORK — LeBron James has made history once again, being selected for the NBA All-Star team for a record-breaking 22nd time, this announcement came on Sunday as he was named a Western Conference reserve by NBA coaches.
Previously, James held a streak as an All-Star starter for 21 consecutive seasons, an unprecedented achievement. This year, however, fans did not cast enough votes for the 41-year-old superstar. With this latest selection, James joins the ranks of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as only the second player to achieve multiple All-Star nods after turning 40.
Joining James among the Western Conference reserves are Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards, Denver’s Jamal Murray, Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren, Houston’s Kevin Durant, Phoenix’s Devin Booker, and Portland’s Deni Avdija.
In the Eastern Conference, reserves include Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell, Atlanta’s Jalen Johnson, New York’s Karl-Anthony Towns, Indiana’s Pascal Siakam, Miami’s Norman Powell, Toronto’s Scottie Barnes, and Detroit’s Jalen Duren. Additionally, Kawhi Leonard of the Clippers, currently ranked seventh in scoring with an average of 28.7 points per game and first in steals at 2.1, could potentially be chosen by NBA commissioner Adam Silver to fill the spot of injured starter Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Throughout the current season, James has averaged 21.9 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.8 rebounds over 33.1 minutes per game, shooting 50.2% from the field and 34.9% beyond the arc across 30 appearances. Though he missed the first 14 games due to sciatica and initially struggled upon his return, his recent performance has seen a marked improvement. In January, James scored 109 points in the fourth quarter, tying him with Durant for the highest total in the league. He also played a pivotal role in guiding the Lakers to the best league record of 14-2 in clutch games leading up to Sunday’s match against New York.
LeBron James is set to join his Lakers teammate Luka Doncic, who received the most All-Star votes, in the upcoming game on February 15 at the Intuit Dome, the home arena of the Clippers. This event is highly anticipated as the new All-Star format will consist of a three-team tournament featuring two U.S. teams and one world team, with Doncic representing the world team.
The innovative structure includes a round-robin format of 12-minute games, paving the way for the top teams to advance to a championship final.
