LA Public Library Now Open for 2026 Poet Laureate Submissions
Los Angeles Seeks Next Poet Laureate for 2026
The application period for the 2026 Los Angeles Poet Laureate position is now open, as announced by Mayor Karen Bass on Saturday. This civic role is designed to celebrate and promote the arts throughout the city.
The Poet Laureate program, a partnership between the Los Angeles Public Library and the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs, offers a $10,000 honorarium along with a one-year term of service. The selected poet will collaborate with the library to host various inclusive poetry events and outreach initiatives, focusing on communities with limited access to literary arts.
"Los Angeles thrives when every voice has the opportunity to be heard," Bass stated. She emphasized the program’s mission, saying, "The Poet Laureate program ensures that poets from all backgrounds can share their work, engage communities across every neighborhood, and inspire Angelenos of all ages. This program is not only about celebrating talent — it’s about building connections, fostering creativity, and making the arts accessible and inclusive for everyone in our city."
Submissions must be received by 8 a.m. on Friday, with the chosen poet expected to act as a cultural ambassador. This role will involve using poetry and spoken word to promote community engagement and showcase the city’s diverse voices.
Applicants must reside in Los Angeles County and have at least ten years of professional experience in poetry, including a history of publication or invited presentations that extend beyond self-curated platforms. The winner will be announced in April, coinciding with National Poetry Month.
"Poets offer a deep understanding and inspiration of our world through the power of the written and spoken word," remarked Daniel Tarica, the general manager of the cultural affairs department. "DCA is committed to championing the literary arts, supporting poetry, and providing learning opportunities for individuals to engage with the craft. We are proud to participate in the 2026 Los Angeles Poet Laureate program to ensure access to high-quality literary arts experiences for all Angelenos."
Since its inception in 2012, the program has celebrated esteemed literary figures, including Eloise Klein Healy, Luis J. Rodriguez, Robin Coste Lewis, and Lynne Thompson.
