Kristen Stewart Purchases the Historic Highland Theatre in Highland Park
Actor-Director Kristen Stewart Acquires Historic Highland Theater in Los Angeles
Kristen Stewart, renowned actor and director, has joined a commendable effort to revitalize at-risk movie theaters in Los Angeles. In a recent interview with Architectural Digest, the Los Angeles native announced her acquisition of the Highland Theater, located in the Highland Park neighborhood.
"I’m fascinated by broken-down old theaters. I always want to see what mysteries they hold," Stewart expressed, highlighting her passion for these historical venues.
The Highland Theater, celebrated for its early 20th-century palace architecture, closed its doors in 2024, just shy of its centennial anniversary. The venue, which has hosted both films and live performances, features a stage, orchestra pit, and balcony, making it a cherished landmark in the area.
Designated as a historic-cultural monument by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission in the 1990s, the theater holds significant historical value. Prior to Stewart’s involvement, notable filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino had made investments in struggling cinemas and exhibition spaces. Tarantino owns the New Beverly Cinema and the Vista Theater, while the iconic Village Theater in Westwood was preserved thanks to the contributions of several prominent filmmakers, including Jason Reitman, known for his work on Juno.
Stewart’s commitment to restoring the Highland Theater marks a continuing trend among filmmakers to invest in the preservation of cultural landmarks, ensuring that such venues remain accessible for future generations.
