Kelly Clarkson Expresses Her Affection for a Contestant Following His Captivating Performance
Kelly Clarkson Expresses Admiration for Contestant on Season Premiere of The Voice
In the season premiere of The Voice: Battle of Champions on February 23, Kelly Clarkson shared her appreciation for a standout performance by contestant Jonah Mayor. The New York singer, 31, introduced himself as “the sexy, muscular, long-haired, sensitive but determined boy band member” before delivering a bold Italian rendition of "Il Mondo."
As Mayor sang, Clarkson, 43, wasted no time in turning her chair, revealing her enthusiasm with an immediate embrace. “Can I have a hug? You are my favorite performance thus far,” she exclaimed. “You are so incredible. What a gift! Oh my God! That was so sexy!”
While fellow coach Adam Levine recognized the challenge of persuading Mayor to join his team, he took the opportunity to commend the vocalist. “Jonah, I think you’re super awesome, and I think you are going to do great things,” Levine said. “You absolutely are the complete package in terms of performer and singer. There’s so much power in your voice. There’s a lot of presence in you.”
Although John Legend did not turn his chair for Mayor, he praised the contestant’s talent, describing him as “a charismatic, super-gifted person.” Legend added, “It was gorgeous, flawless, beautiful. I was thoroughly impressed by what you did.”
As the auditions progressed, Clarkson voiced her determination to land Mayor on her team. “You sang, I think, three syllables and I was like, ‘Choose me, pick me, love me,’” she noted, drawing comparisons to renowned artists Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli. “I’m down for the ride. I have won the most.”
After weighing his options, Mayor ultimately chose Clarkson as his coach. “I love you. I’m so in love with you,” she declared, emphasizing her eagerness to help him showcase his talents. In a confessional, Clarkson expressed her admiration further, stating, “I love Jonah. I do love people that can sing opera. This season, I’m really adamant about finding people in different genres and he is literally perfect for my team. I would have cried if I lost him to Adam.”
This season of The Voice introduces a new competition element, where the coach with the most artists receiving three-chair turns during the blind auditions will gain a significant advantage later in the series. Clarkson remarked, “It really just depends on what artists are coming out and who they’re inspired by and want to work with.”
The Voice airs on NBC on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET, with new episodes available for streaming the following day on Peacock.
