Jon Stewart Critiques MAGA’s Shift on Second Amendment After Alex Pretti’s Tragic Death: “Guns Define Who You Are”
In a recent episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart tackled the complexities of right-wing narratives surrounding the tragic shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents. Laying bare the hypocrisy in these responses has become a hallmark of Stewart’s Monday night hosting.
“Iran right now — an authoritarian state currently being rocked by protests that threaten to tear the whole nation apart,” Stewart began, introducing his guest, former Tehran bureau chief for The Washington Post, Jason Rezaian. He added, “I mean, can you imagine?” with a note of sarcasm that turned serious as he delved deeper into the topic.
Stewart took aim at claims from figures like DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who suggested Pretti was plotting against ICE agents. “I’m hearing there may be some grainy Zapruder-like footage from — I don’t know — every angle imaginable that contradicts the government’s version of events,” Stewart remarked.

In an unexpected segment, correspondent Jordan Klepper appeared live from Minneapolis to mock the administration’s shifting justifications for Pretti’s death. Using humor, he illustrated their inconsistencies, depicting ICE agents as cute cats and Pretti as an armed version of Spider-Man villain Doc Ock. “DHS is not married to this version. Here’s another one they’re pitching: What if I told you the ICE agents just do this on the side, and they’re actually all K-pop stars?” Klepper joked, before referencing the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters.
Despite the timing of the taping, Stewart managed to address the recent news of Border Patrol “commander at large” Greg Bovino’s termination. He airily mused about Bovino’s sudden appearance, likening it to a character from the “Trump cinematic universe.”
Stewart criticized reports that ICE agents were demoralized by public feedback, quipping, “People screaming ‘Fuck you’ eight hours a day is basically every customer service job in this country.”
As he pointed out further discrepancies in the administration’s accounts—transitioning from labeling Pretti a domestic terrorist to scrutinizing his legally owned firearm—Stewart questioned, “Are you saying … that the guns are the problem?” A flying pig graphic humorously punctuated his frustration.
Continuing his critique of right-wing hypocrisy, Stewart contrasted MAGA’s praise of gun-carrying January 6 insurrectionists and Kyle Rittenhouse with their current stance. “I wasn’t shocked when you guys gave up the First Amendment, the Fourth Amendment, the 10th Amendment, and the 14th Amendment at Trump’s behest, but the Second?”
“Isn’t that kind of the load-bearing law of the ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flag? Your snake’s down to a newt … C’mon, guns are your whole personality,” he noted, capturing the absurdity of the situation.
In closing, Stewart adopted a more serious tone: “To add insult to injury is the denial of the reality that we all witnessed. They’re lying. We saw it. And that’s how brazen they lie when they know we’ve seen the truth. Imagine how they lie when there’s no evidence to contradict them. That more than anything explains why Alex Pretti really was a threat; because he was brandishing a weapon: a handheld, aluminum 1080p 60fps weapon of mass illumination. Because there is nothing more dangerous to a regime predicated on lies than witnesses who capture the truth.”
