John Lydon from Sex Pistols Shares Why He Joined The Masked Singer UK
John Lydon Reveals Motivations Behind Participation in The Masked Singer UK
John Lydon, the iconic lead singer of the Sex Pistols, recently disclosed his primary motivation for joining The Masked Singer UK. In a candid interview on January 12, he explained that financial considerations played a significant role in his decision to participate in the popular ITV show.
During the discussion on This Morning, Lydon, now 69, humorously stated that his appearance on the singing competition was "hardly" a career high. Nevertheless, he expressed hope that his participation brought enjoyment to his fans.

Lydon revealed that his earnings from the show were earmarked for funding a new album by his band, Public Image Ltd. "Fun, firstly. Mostly, accurately, the money," he stated, adding that the funds allowed them to record in Portugal for a month, along with a brief holiday afterward.
Interestingly, one of Lydon’s bandmates later speculated about the source of the studio funding but failed to make the connection to his show appearance. Lydon was unmasked as the performer behind the yak costume on January 10, after performing hits like Olivia Newton-John’s "Physical" and Tom Jones’s "Sex Bomb."
Reflecting on his earlier experiences, Lydon recounted his motivations for taking part in the U.S. version of The Masked Singer in 2021, where he appeared as a jester. He revealed that his decision was deeply personal, driven by his desire to entertain his late wife, Nora Foster, who passed away in April 2023 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. "I wanted her to enjoy that and see if she could guess if it was me before she died," he recalled, noting that she immediately recognized him despite her condition.
Throughout his career, Lydon has been open about the challenges of caring for his wife, referring to himself as her "full-time carer" in a 2020 interview.
