Jack Antonoff Voices Concerns About AI in Music, Comparing Songwriting to an Ancient Ritual

Jack Antonoff has expressed strong views on the increasing prevalence of AI-generated music, taking to Instagram to address the issue directly with his fans.
On May 13, the Bleachers frontman criticized individuals he deems “musicians” who rely on artificial intelligence for their work. “What we do has become an ancient ritual,” Antonoff stated. “You don’t have to write music anymore, you don’t have to record it and you don’t have to bring the band out and play it.”
He further articulated his concerns on behalf of the traditional music community: “So to everyone who is gassed up about the new ways you can fake making art, by all means drive right off that cliff. We’re genuinely happy to see you go … godless whores.”
Antonoff, a Grammy-winning producer, remarked that it is often those out of touch with reality who advocate for embracing AI amid the looming changes in the music industry. “The new artists I know are genuinely uninterested in anything that doesn’t come from within,” he added.
Known for his outspoken nature, Antonoff has frequently addressed various issues within the music industry, including the monopoly held by major concert companies. During a conversation with Hayley Williams for *Rolling Stone* in October, he noted, “You and your band can’t turn a profit, and then we have to watch the companies that own all these rooms and monopolize the whole f—ing thing and post billions of earnings.”
He has also made headlines recently for a sarcastic comment regarding Ticketmaster, poking fun at the entertainment giant’s claims of successfully identifying scalpers on its platform. In April, he quipped, “You caught you?” on X.
