ITV’s Big Saturday Night Show: How Graham Norton’s Unique Style Brings Fun to ‘The Neighbourhood’
Graham Norton has taken a unique approach as the host of ITV’s upcoming reality series, The Neighbourhood, by living near the contestants for an entire month. The show, which premieres on Saturday, aims to deliver original entertainment in the competitive Saturday night programming landscape.
Show producers Richard Cowles and John Hay, who have previously worked on popular shows like Love Island and Squid Game: The Challenge, shared that Norton immersed himself in the experience to be as close as possible to the contestants in the cul-de-sac named “Keep Your Enemies Close.”
The Neighbourhood features diverse households living along a street, competing in various challenges while also socializing to build friendships. Contestants must navigate the fine line of forming alliances and avoiding elimination, with the victorious household receiving a £250,000 ($338,000) cash prize.
Cowles noted that while Norton initially expressed skepticism about participating, the originality of the show’s concept ultimately won him over. “He felt like it was a truly original idea,” Cowles said. Norton is known for hosting one of the UK’s most popular late-night shows and has drawn praise from fans, including Taylor Swift, who has described him as “insanely charismatic and lovable.”
Hay highlighted Norton’s dedication, stating that the host successfully balanced warmth with drama, enhancing the show’s tone. “By being there and by being the presence at its heart, he set the tone for us perfectly,” Hay remarked.
Norton’s recent appearance in Taylor Swift’s viral music video for “Opalite” underscores his cultural relevance, bridging his work in television and entertainment. His book, Forever Home, which is being adapted for film, aligns with the show’s themes of family dynamics, sparking his interest in the project.
Although Norton has limited his promotional efforts for the series, he expressed in the program notes his enthusiasm for the show’s exploration of human curiosity regarding life behind closed doors.
Board game pitch
Cowles and Hay aim to demonstrate that innovative and engaging Saturday night entertainment is thriving. The concept originated during a creative meeting at Lifted Entertainment, where the team envisioned an unexplored reality TV environment.
“We thought that the most relatable environment is basically your street and that led us to conversations about neighbors that annoy us,” Cowles explained, indicating a rich potential for storytelling.
With the challenge of completing the show’s set in just six months, the team scoured the UK before choosing a picturesque street in the Peak District, which Cowles described as an idealized version of British village life.
Diversity was key in casting, as the show features groups of friends, families, and students facing off in challenges involving everyday household items, while maintaining interpersonal relationships to avoid elimination.
“The two are in conflict with each other, so it was fascinating to see how people played the game,” Hay noted, referring to the contrasting strategies of winning versus social gameplay.
With optimism, Cowles and Hay believe The Neighbourhood will resonate with audiences and see success in international markets. Hay added, “Every country has the concept of neighbors, so there is relatability, but ours is an idealized version of a British neighborhood. Each country could adapt that to their own.”
