Experience Zejtune: A Unique Maltese Film Premiere at the Göteborg Film Festival
Michela Farrugia stars as Mar in a poignant exploration of identity and heritage in her latest film. Mar seeks to leave her hometown of Malta for good following her estranged mother’s death, planning to use the proceeds from the sale of inherited farmland to finance her departure.
As she journeys across the island to claim her land, she encounters Nenu, an exuberant 80-year-old folk singer. Nenu’s music and lively spirit challenge Mar’s intentions to escape, fostering an unexpected connection that deepens Mar’s appreciation for the homeland she had hoped to leave behind.
The cast includes Nenu Borg, Michael Azzopardi, and Frida Cauchi, adding depth to the story.
Director Alex Camilleri, born in the U.S. shortly after his parents emigrated from Malta, has maintained strong ties to the Mediterranean island. Malta has become renowned as a filming location for major international productions, including Gladiator, Troy, and Jurassic World: Dominion.
Camilleri stands out as one of the few Maltese directors gaining international recognition. His debut feature, Luzzu, premiered in the Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Dramatic lineup in 2021, where Jesmark Scicluna earned the Special Jury Award for acting.
Camilleri’s new film is produced by Oliver Mallia of Pellikola and Ramin Bahrani of Noruz Films, with Camilleri also serving as a producer through his Solari Productions company. Co-producers include Fred Burle and Sol Bondy from One Two Films, along with Rebecca Anastasi.
Sales for the film are being managed by Films Boutique.
