Ann Morgan Guilbert left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
Guilbert rose to fame playing Millie Helper in The Dick Van Dyke Show, where she captivated audiences alongside Mary Tyler Moore’s character, Laura Petrie. Her casting was somewhat serendipitous, as she recounted to The Los Angeles Times how a friend encouraged her to audition.
“Jerry Paris (who played Millie’s dentist husband Jerry) had been a friend of mine for years, so he sort of dragged me down to read for it. I think they thought that I was not going to be pretty enough and too broad because I had done revues for so long. Luckily, I got the job,” she shared.
Early in the first season, Guilbert faced a personal challenge when she discovered she was pregnant.
“I got pregnant, I think, after four or five episodes. So I told Carl Reiner about it and he thought about it and said, ‘Let’s just go with it and see what happens,'” she recalled. “I don’t think it was ever mentioned in the script. I worked up until my eighth month.”
On January 7, 1962, Guilbert and her husband George Eckstein welcomed their second daughter, Hallie Jane Eckstein, joining their eldest daughter, Nora.
Following her success on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Guilbert transitioned to smaller roles and regional theater, while both of her daughters pursued careers in entertainment.
Hallie Jane eventually became known as Hallie Todd, appearing in various television shows including Brothers (1984), Murder She Wrote (1990-1991), and most notably as Joanne McGuire on Disney’s Lizzie McGuire from 2001 to 2004. Meanwhile, Nora opted for behind-the-scenes work, focusing on writing and serving as an acting coach.
Throughout her career, Guilbert continued to act, captivating a new generation as Grandma Yetta Rosenberg on The Nanny from 1993 to 1999. Her later appearances included roles on various shows, concluding with her performances as Birdy Lamb in Getting On (2013-2015) and Gigi in Life in Pieces (2016).
Guilbert passed away at the age of 87 on June 14, 2016, after a brief battle with cancer. In reflecting on her mother’s final days, Hallie noted that Guilbert experienced little discomfort, expressing deep gratitude for the support they received during that time. “Our gratitude is miles deep and holds us strong. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she shared with fans.
