This documentary features interviews with notable figures, including the late directors Rob Reiner and David Lynch, along with a host of industry giants.
Both parts will be available for streaming on HBO Max starting January 22. HBO announced the premiere dates along with details about the interviewee lineup, accompanied by a trailer and production art.
In addition to Brooks, the documentary features conversations with comedians Ben Stiller, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, and Dave Chappelle, among others. Also included are Brooks’ children—Stefanie, Nicolas, Eddie, and Max—and his granddaughter, Samantha.
Directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, the documentary explores the illustrious life and career of Mel Brooks, including his friendships and personal relationships.
The first part, airing at 8 p.m. ET/PT on January 22, chronicles Brooks’ early life, from his childhood in Brooklyn to his experiences during World War II, as well as his formative years in the Borscht Belt. It highlights his pivotal role in the emergence of modern sketch comedy alongside contemporaries such as Sid Caesar and Carl Reiner, culminating in the creation of his iconic character, The 2000 Year Old Man.
HBO’s description notes that Brooks’ journey involved transforming a fear of failure into creative motivation and utilizing therapy during challenging times. Drawing from his Jewish heritage and the prejudices therein, he became known as one of Hollywood’s boldest satirists, directing landmark films such as The Producers (1967) and Blazing Saddles (1974).
The second part, debuting on January 23 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, will detail Brooks’ rise to superstardom and the lasting influence of his work on contemporary comedy. It will examine his cherished friendship with Carl Reiner, as well as creative partnerships with Gene Wilder and others. Brooks’ long marriage to actress Anne Bancroft and his family life are depicted through decades of personal archive footage.
Additionally, the documentary will explore his Broadway success with The Producers, which won a record-setting 12 Tony Awards. The synopsis concludes by framing Brooks’ narrative as a compelling blend of humor and courage, highlighting his ability to transform satire into empathy and creativity into lasting impact.
