Get Ready for the Mission League Track Finals This Thursday: Expect Plenty of Speed!
Tom Cruise Inspired Speed: Sherman Oaks Notre Dame Hosts Mission League Track Finals
As the Mission League track and field finals approach this Thursday at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, excitement is building, reminiscent of Tom Cruise’s famous declaration in "Top Gun" about having a "need for speed."
Speed will certainly be on display in the 100 meters, where an impressive roster of athletes has clocked times under 11 seconds this season. Leading the pack is Zion Phelps of Loyola, with a swift time of 10.39 seconds. Close behind are Quincy Hearn of Notre Dame at 10.52 seconds and Jayden Davis from Loyola at 10.57 seconds. Freshman Calvin Portley of Harvard-Westlake also made waves with his prelim time of 10.69 seconds earlier this week.
With a staggering twelve runners breaking the 11-second barrier in the 100 meters preliminaries, the finals promise to be highly competitive.
The excitement extends to the 4×100 relay, where the Notre Dame team, featuring Nikko Petronicolos, Quincy Hearn, Beckham Borquez, and Emmanuel Pullins, has recorded a fast time of 40.76 seconds. Loyola is not far behind, boasting a time of 40.73 seconds.
In addition to the relay, Borquez stands out as a top hurdler, while JJ Harel, the defending state champion, is set to compete in the high jump. Ejam Yohannes of Loyola is also expected to be a strong contender for the state title in the 400 meters.
This week marks a full slate of league finals, with the Trinity League finals scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. at JSerra. Following this, the Southern Section preliminaries will take place next weekend, leading up to the finals on May 16 at Moorpark High.
