Gene Simmons, bassist for KISS, has expressed admiration for Taylor Swift, likening her immense and dedicated fanbase to the fervent support experienced during Beatlemania.
In a recent episode of the podcast LegendsNLeaders, Simmons discussed the powerful connection musicians can have with their audience, underscoring that real-time interactions with fans are a true measure of an artist’s impact. "The only analogy I can point to is the Swifties of today," he remarked.
Simmons elaborated on the unique bond between Swift and her fans, stating, “Yes, the songs are cool, and [Taylor’s] wonderful, we know her, but it’s more than that. It’s almost a gathering of the tribes … The Beatles had that. It was called Beatlemania. It’s almost cultish. You’re a member of that, and there’s a connection.”
He also recounted a memorable moment from 2009, when a youthful Swift and her band humorously interrupted Keith Urban’s performance while dressed as KISS. This prank occurred during Swift’s early career as an opener for Urban, long before she became a global superstar. Some long-time fans may recall how the 14-time Grammy winner documented the event in a vlog, capturing both the preparation and Urban’s reaction.
“Put in ‘Taylor Swift KISS band makeup’ [in the search bar], and you’ll see Taylor and the whole band come out in KISS makeup and do that thing,” Simmons said, expressing pride in the amusing collaboration.
Simmons is not alone in acknowledging Swift’s significant influence on contemporary music. Ringo Starr has remarked that the excitement surrounding Swift is reminiscent of the Beatlemania he experienced during his time with The Beatles.
Additionally, during the podcast, Simmons reiterated his stance that hip-hop does not belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He pointed out the exclusion of iconic bands like Iron Maiden while artists such as Grandmaster Flash are included, stating, “It’s not my music. I don’t come from the ghetto.”
