Fran Drescher Reflects on Her Sitcom Journey and Why She’s Moving On
Fran Drescher, widely recognized for her iconic portrayal of Fran Fine on the CBS sitcom The Nanny, has made it clear that a return to sitcoms is not in her immediate plans. In a recent interview on Ted Danson’s podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, she expressed her reluctance to re-enter that realm.
Drescher stated, “I don’t see myself doing another sitcom,” adding that the daily routine of working on a soundstage is not something she wishes to revisit. Reflecting on her previous experience, she noted, “The last one that I did wasn’t my show. I played the mom in it, and I really didn’t… I loved the people, but I didn’t enjoy the experience that much because we were shooting it over the winter months.”
While Drescher did not specify the sitcom she was referring to, it is noteworthy that her last role as a series regular was in NBC’s Indebted. In this 2020 Dan Levy comedy, she portrayed Debbie Klein, mother of Adam Pally’s character. However, the show was canceled after just one season.
Describing her time on the show, Drescher remarked, “It was pretty dark when I entered the stage, and it was dark when I left it. I just lost the whole day.” She further contemplated the value of her work on the series, questioning, “Is this how I would have wanted to spend the day if it turned out to be the last day of my life? And it wasn’t.”
Despite her hesitations, Drescher remains open to future television opportunities. She suggested that a role involving more creative control might entice her back, stating, “Maybe when I’m writing and executive-producing, directing, all of those hats that I wore in my own shows, maybe it would be more stimulating and, you know, gratifying. But in this situation, I think just playing the mom in it, it just wasn’t enough for me. And I felt like I could’ve been doing other things during my day.”
