Former HBO Max Spain Leader Takes on New Role at Secuoya Studios
A day after José María Caro’s departure from HBO Max Spain was announced, he has resurfaced as the Chief Content Officer at Secuoya Studios. Caro is set to spearhead creative development for new projects, shape the editorial vision of productions, and oversee the studio’s sales strategy and international market penetration.
This leadership change follows the recent exit of Secuoya Studios CEO Brendan Fitzgerald, marking a significant transition for the organization. In a statement, Secuoya noted that Caro’s appointment signals a “new phase of growth and international expansion,” aimed at further strengthening the independent studio model.
“Secuoya Studios has extraordinary talent, vision, and potential to continue growing in the global market,” Caro remarked, expressing enthusiasm about contributing to the studio’s journey.
Raúl Berdonés, Executive Chairman of Secuoya, emphasized Caro’s qualifications, stating, “José María Caro brings together an exceptional combination of creative vision, international experience, and deep expertise in content development and production. His arrival reinforces Secuoya Studios’ commitment to a strong and distinctive strategy, consolidating our position as a studio focused on creating meaningful stories with a unique identity and the ability to connect with global audiences.”
Caro’s transition to Secuoya comes shortly after his exit from Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), where he mutually agreed to part ways with HBO Max after a decade of service. Following his departure, his team will now report to Deniz Sasmaz Oflaz, who recently assumed the role of HBO Max’s VP for Local Originals in Spain, Italy, and Turkey.
Caro had initially joined Warner Bros. in April 2024 and stepped into his previous post in January 2025, succeeding Alberto Carullo, the former VP of Productions for Italy and Iberia, who left for Mediaset.
