Film Movement Brings Bad Bunny Collaborator Stillz’s First Feature ‘Barrio Triste’ to North America
Film Movement Acquires North American Rights to "Barrio Triste"
Film Movement has secured North American distribution rights for Barrio Triste, marking the directorial debut of photographer and music video director Stillz, recognized for his collaboration with Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny.
This acquisition follows closely after Bad Bunny’s historic Super Bowl halftime performance, which Stillz directed the teaser for.
Set in Medellín, Colombia, during the early 1990s, Barrio Triste tells the story of four teenage boys who steal a television news camera, capturing their reckless and often violent escapades across the city’s streets and neighborhoods. This found-footage style film presents a vibrant chronicle of their experiences while uncovering deeper themes of loneliness and social dislocation.
The film made its world premiere in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival in September, earning acclaim for its immersive visual language and its raw portrayal of marginalized youth. It has since been showcased at both the Toronto and New York film festivals.
Barrio Triste is the first feature film produced by Harmony Korine’s multidisciplinary company EDGLRD, established in 2023, and notably not directed by Korine himself.
The acquisition announcement was made by Michael Rosenberg, President of Film Movement, and James Clauer, Head of Development at EDGLRD.
“Barrio Triste is an unflinching, deeply immersive debut that announces Stillz as a fearless and essential new filmmaker,” Rosenberg stated. “With its raw immediacy, poetic undercurrents, and electrifying score, the film captures a world rarely seen with such intimacy. We’re proud to bring this bold and challenging work to audiences in theaters across North America.”
Clauer remarked, “Barrio Triste is exactly why we built EDGLRD—to support bold filmmakers and deliver high-octane content at the speed of culture, without compromising craft. The North American theatrical debut is a major milestone, and we’re proud to bring Stillz’s urgent, unapologetic vision to audiences.”
Film Movement also features an array of notable works in its current catalog, including LGBTQ-animated drama Bouchra by visual artists Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani, along with Chie Hayakawa’s drama Renoir and Dominik Moll’s police procedural Case 137, both of which premiered in Competition at Cannes in 2025.
