Walton Goggins Shares Insights on Cooper in ‘Fallout’ Season 2: How He Represents Us in a Changing World
As Season 2 of Fallout returns viewers to its dystopian wasteland, the show’s star, Walton Goggins, acknowledges the real-world parallels present in the narrative.
Goggins describes his character’s journey, stating, “He has no control over the information that is coming to him, and he’s understanding in real time the world that he thought he knew no longer exists.” He continues, “And he’s just like any reasonable person trying to make sense out of something that can’t make sense.”

Addressing the show’s tone, Goggins explains, “This show isn’t political in the sense that the writers of the show don’t overtly stand on a soapbox and preach. … You’re a part of a story that just so happens to dovetail very nicely into what’s going on in the world around it.” He emphasizes that their storytelling combines absurdity, satire, and real consequences.
In the upcoming season, The Ghoul embarks on a journey to New Vegas with Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) in search of his wife and child. Meanwhile, the character Cooper’s past is explored, revealing the origins of the nuclear conspiracy that led to the destruction of civilization, resulting in the current dystopian setting.

Goggins further emphasized the show’s themes by quoting co-star Aaron Moten, stating, “Everyone in this show wants to change the world. They just have a different how.”
He elaborated, “It’s really like a pole position for where the show is, what it’s trying to say, and what the world of Fallout, the game, is saying. You have all of these warring factions, but not so dissimilar than the world that we live in today.” Goggins noted that while these factions propose varying solutions, individuals are united in their desire for change.
Additionally, Goggins remarked, “The Ghoul really is the only loner here. He just wants to be with his family. But all of the other tribes, if you will, they’re just trying to [rebuild society] their way.” He pointed out the tendency for new political affiliations to emerge in the aftermath of calamity as people strive to create a society aligned with their ideals.
New episodes of Season 2 of Fallout will premiere on Prime Video on December 17, with episodes releasing weekly on Wednesdays.
