Engaging Talks and New Perspectives: Katy Arnander Reflects on Year Two of SXSW London
SXSW London: Insights and Innovations Ahead of the Second Edition
As SXSW London approaches its second year, Katy Arnander, the event’s lead, reflects on key lessons learned from the inaugural festival. “Programming and audience insights, along with operational learnings, have been invaluable,” Arnander said. “You can’t fully understand the dynamics until you see how attendees engage with the music, screens, and conference components.”
Last year’s festival attracted over 25,000 people, providing critical feedback and data that guided this year’s planning. “We learned about the diverse audiences that appreciate what our festival offers. It’s about exploring the future while also connecting with established creatives across various fields,” she noted.
Timely discussions highlighted the impact of notable speakers. "Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA notably discussed AI’s role in music. The event also featured political figures like Tony Blair, conversing with then-UK Technology Minister Peter Kyle about AI’s potential to transform government,” Arnander said. Additionally, she described high-profile dialogues, such as the one between Ben Lamm and Sophie Turner, focusing on the genetic reconstruction of woolly mammoths.
The discourse around artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved significantly in the past year. "A year ago, people were questioning the essence and future impact of AI. Now, the conversation centers on its applications—such as its implications in research and development, as well as its role in combating misinformation in media,” Arnander explained.
Arnander emphasized the importance of maintaining the essence of SXSW in Austin while tailoring it to London’s distinct environment. “We aim to blend the festival’s core DNA—bringing together tech, business, and creative industries. Shoreditch, resembling Austin’s creative hub, adds a unique visual arts strand that complements our program,” she stated.
The festival plans to embrace London’s international and diverse atmosphere, catering to an audience that spans not only Europe but also regions as far as North Africa and the Middle East. “We’re partnering with American companies eager to explore the European market. The dynamics of our location enable us to connect with a rich tapestry of cultures and industries,” she noted.
Arnander underscored SXSW London’s unique position in a crowded calendar of events. “It’s not an industry-specific gathering. Our focus is on collaboration and the exchange of ideas, breaking down silos to reflect the multi-hyphenate reality of contemporary work life," she said.
The need for in-person interaction is more critical than ever. "When diverse groups come together—a geneticist, a tech innovator, or filmmakers—their conversations can spark transformative ideas. These serendipitous moments are what SXSW is known for," Arnander added. The festival is enhancing networking opportunities, with over 200 mentors and organized roundtables and networking events to facilitate meaningful connections.
Looking ahead to the screen program, Arnander expressed excitement about notable upcoming speakers. “The Russo brothers will converse with Don Mustard, formerly of Epic Games, and we’re featuring Russell T Davies and Sharon Horgan. We’ve also announced headliners at the Barbican, including Savage House.”
As the festival gears up, Arnander is hopeful about attracting even more attendees. “We have finite capacity, but increased public activations will boost foot traffic. Events at locations like Ely’s Yard and Montacute Yards will enhance visibility. Additionally, our partnership with Waymo, featuring autonomous vehicles, is set to make an impact,” she explained.
While the technology still awaits regulatory approval, Arnander hinted at a bright future: “Next year, they could potentially arrive at the festival in driverless cars.”
SXSW London is poised to deliver an innovative experience, blending creativity with forward-thinking discussions as it embarks on its second year.
