Elizabeth’s Creator Brings New BBC Drama to Life: A Deep Dive into a Celebrity Legal Battle
Anya Reiss to Create BBC Drama Exploring Celebrity Legal Battles
Anya Reiss, the creator of Becoming Elizabeth, is in the process of developing a new drama for the BBC titled Reputation, which delves into the chaos of a celebrity legal battle.
The storyline centers around a prominent lawyer known for her defense of free expression, who becomes embroiled in a high-profile case involving global pop star Davina Knight. Tensions escalate when Knight releases a controversial song accusing her ex-husband, Billy, of abusive behavior. In response, Billy retaliates, igniting a very public libel suit between the two. The unfolding drama sees public relations strategies deployed and social media platforms becoming arenas for judgment and conflict.
Reiss’s narrative resonates with recent headline-grabbing stories, such as the public spat between actors Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, as well as Lily Allen’s comments about her ex-husband, David Harbour, in her latest album.
Having previously collaborated with The Forge on Becoming Elizabeth, Reiss expressed her enthusiasm about this project, stating, “When I found out London was the global capital of high stakes libel cases – where the rich, powerful and famous come to fight in public for their reputations – I was in. I’ve loved writing this world and now I’m excited to get it off the page and onto the screen.”
Reputation, consisting of six hour-long episodes, has been commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama. The series will be produced by Alex Kazamia of Generation Z, while direction will be handled by BAFTA and RTS award winner Mahalia Belo, known for her work on The End We Start From and The Long Song. Reiss will serve as an executive producer alongside George Ormond, Jade Taylor, and Belo, with contributing writers including Shyam Popat and Karla Crome. The series will be distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.
